Australia mourns the loss of Queen Elizabeth II. But it is already certain: Under King Charles III. the subject of the republic and the turning away from the royal family will flare up again.
No sooner had the death of the monarch become known the Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt demanded on Twitter: "We must become a republic".
The last referendum ended with a no to the republic. The reason was less that Australia was keen to keep the monarchy. Many Aussies feared having a politician as president in the event of a republic. The queen was considered the guarantor of stability, reliability and incorruptibility. "Why change something when it works?" That was the rhetorical question of the monarchy supporters at the time.
