The great joy of still being small,
a child probably doesn't appreciate,
and wishes they were already around 16 or 17.
But then at 18 they think: Hold on,
anyone over 20 is old.
No sooner have we reached 20,
than 30 seems ancient.
And 40, what a turning point!
50 is almost considered the end.
But after 50, little by little,
the end is pushed further into the future.
60 now seems quite acceptable,
and only 70 miserable.
At 70, however, one quietly hopes,
I'll reach 80, God willing.
Whoever survives 80 then strives purposefully for 90.
Having reached that point, one quickly counts
the people who are even older.
Das grosse Glück, noch klein zu sein,
sieht wohl der Mensch als Kind nicht ein,
und möchte, dass er ungefähr
schon 16 oder 17 wär.
Doch dann mit 18 denkt er: Halt,
wer über 20 ist, ist alt.
Kaum ist die 20 grad geschafft,
erscheint die dreissig greisenhaft.
Und an die 40, welche Wende
Die 50 gilt beinah als Ende.
Doch nach der 50, peu à peu,
schraubt man das Ende in die Höh.
Die 60 scheint jetzt ganz passabel
Und erst die 70 miserabel.
Mit 70 aber hofft man still,
ich werde 80, so Gott will.
Wer dann die 80 überlebt,
zielsicher nach der 90 strebt.
Dort angelangt, zählt man geschwind,
die Leute, die noch älter sind.
