Sometime in my early childhood, mother took me for a week to stay with Aunt Lore who lived in an old house which had an equally old and beautiful garden.
Having just arrived at my aunt's house, I was drawn through the open kitchen door directly into the garden.
I stopped and was amazed because I had never seen anything so beautiful. I heard the noise of the many insects, saw the colourful flowers and sniffed their scent and the scent of the kitchen herbs, which was completely unknown to me.
The next morning I discovered the pile of sand on the wall of the house, where I could now bake long rows of sand cakes with all kinds of pots and spoons from Aunt Lore's kitchen. In between, I glanced at the chickens pawing and clucking quietly in their enclosure. During the next few days they became more and more my friends.
At the end of the garden I discovered an old arbor with an old worn armchair, some rusty garden tools in the corner and a birdcage where a canary might have sung long ago. Next to the arbor, on the compost, student flowers were growing. Almost every day I enjoyed sitting in that old wicker chair for a while and daydreaming.
One morning I was helping my aunt pick beans. When the basket was almost full and I bent down to take it up, I discovered little brownish animals on the ground running in a long line in one direction. One of them was even carrying something white in front of it.
"Look how fast they can run," I shouted. But the aunt was already picking beans again and didn't hear.
And yet I will never forget those wonderful days with their colours and scents and I am sure that my love for the beauties of nature had begun here.
